Creating a New Belly Button after Plastic Surgery

A person's body can undergo major changes from weight gain and weight loss. That's why our Philadelphia, PA plastic surgery center offers so many body contouring and sculpting options. These procedures can address loose skin, stretch marks, and other issues with body contour.

The navel itself can be drastically changed by pregnancy, weight loss, and umbilical hernias. We'd like to consider cosmetic and reconstructive surgery for the belly button, as it's an oft-neglected topic in plastic surgery.

Creating a New Belly Button: Is It Possible?

Yes.

Plastic surgeons are able to improve the appearance of the belly button in many ways, which includes creating a brand new belly button. Belly button rejuvenation procedures take different forms, allowing surgeons to alter the shape, size, and position of a patient's navel.

When reshaping or repositioning an existing belly button, the procedure is known as an umbilicoplasty. When crafting a new belly button, the procedure is known as a neoumbilicoplasty.

Ideal Candidates for Belly Button Rejuvenation Surgery

Good candidates for belly button rejuvenation surgery are people who lack a belly button or would like the appearance of their belly button to be improved. They should be in good overall health and not experience any health problems that would be aggravated by a surgical procedure. It's important for patients to have realistic expectations about belly button rejuvenation and the healing process.

Neoumbilicoplasty During Surgery or After the Surgery?

Surgeons have an important choice to consider when it comes to the creation of a new belly button. Sometimes the belly button surgery can be performed concurrently with another body contouring procedure, such as a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or a total body lift. Other times it may be more ideal to perform the surgery after a patient has healed from surgery.

The ideal timing for a neoumbilicoplasty can vary. The right time for your surgery can be discussed during a consultation at our practice.

What Happens during Neoumbilicoplasty?

The surgical procedure can vary depending on the nature of surgery:

  • Reshaping the Belly Button: Incisions are made in the belly button in order to make the necessary adjustments, such as reducing or increasing the size, changing the belly button from an innie to an outie or vice versa, or improvement of general belly button position and prominence.
  • Creating a New Belly Button: Small, carefully placed incisions are made along the part of the abdominal region where the new belly button is to be located. Using sutures, the surgeon can create the appearance of a belly button on that portion of the abdominal skin, with the proper depth, size, and shape.

The exact procedure you will undergo can be discussed in greater detail with your surgeon.

The Results of the Belly Button Surgery

The results of belly button surgery can be quite dramatic yet appear perfectly natural.

Many patients report improved confidence when wearing certain tops, bathing suits, and undergarments. Few people will realize that the belly button has undergone any work since scars are hidden from view and are difficult to detect.
