Restylane® is a hyaluronic-based dermal filler designed to treat mild to moderate wrinkles around the mouth. It can reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds, the creases along the corners of the mouth that are otherwise known as laugh lines or marionette lines, as well as lipstick lines above the upper lip. In addition, Restylane® is FDA-approved to enhance the appearance of lips - the only dermal filler that has achieved this benchmark. At Jefferson Plastic Surgery in Philadelphia, patients can undergo Restylane® injections to rejuvenate their facial appearance.
Restylane® is not recommended for facial use on patients under 18, or for the lips on patients under the age of 21. Additionally, patients should not undergo Restylane® treatments if they are pregnant or nursing, have been hospitalized for severe allergies, are allergic to lidocaine, or have a bleeding disorder.
The Restylane® Procedure
The treatment process is simple and can be done in a doctor’s office rather than a surgical suite. During the procedure, Restylane® is injected into the skin or the lips with an ultrafine needle. If the patient has chosen to undergo treatment for facial lines and creases, he or she may need a follow-up treatment anywhere from four to nine months following initial treatment.
Restylane® differs from Perlane®, another hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler, in its formulation and uses. Restylane® is designed with smaller particles and is injected into the superficial layers of the skin; this makes it well suited for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. Perlane® is better suited to the treatment of deep wrinkles.
The recovery period following Restylane® injections is minimal. Patients should be able to return to normal daily activities within 24 hours of treatment. Patients should not touch or massage the injection site for the first 24 hours following treatment.
Restylane® Side Effects
There may be tenderness, redness, bruising, or swelling at the injection sites. These are mild and will go away after seven days for areas around the mouth, and after 14 days for the lips. Swelling may last longer than seven days if patients are under 35 years of age, and bruising may last longer if patients are over the age of 35.
In very rare cases, it is possible to inject Restylane® into a blood vessel, which may increase the risk of bleeding. In patients that are prone to cold sores, Restylane® may trigger an outbreak. There may be increased bruising, bleeding, or swelling if patients have been taking St. John’s wort, high doses of Vitamin E, blood-thinning medications such as Plavix or Coumadin, or any NSAID painkiller or aspirin. These medications should be stopped two to three weeks before the procedure until two to three weeks afterward.
The effects of Restylane® should be apparent for both face and lips almost immediately after treatment. Effects of lip treatments will last up to six months. Effects for lines around the nose and mouth, particularly laugh lines, may last longer. In some cases, patients may need a follow-up treatment at four to nine months after the first treatment session.
