Recovery after a Mommy Makeover

Many people may think that once you have decided to not have any more children, you will have much more free time on your hands. In fact, quite the opposite is true. You are still as busy as ever raising your children. You take them to and from school, sports, and other activities; help them with their homework; and take them to the doctor’s when they are sick. All of this rushing around may leave you wishing you had the time to take care of yourself, particularly in terms of trying to get your body back to its pre-pregnancy shape. This is where a mommy makeover may help. But how can you schedule the time needed for recovery into an already full schedule?

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is actually a group of cosmetic procedures to help a woman restore her body back to a more youthful appearance once she is done with childbirth and breastfeeding. It most often combines a tummy tuck, abdominal liposuction, breast augmentation or reduction, and a breast lift to correct for sagging or drooping breasts following pregnancy and lactation. Our staff at Jefferson Plastic Surgery has performed hundreds of these mommy makeover package procedures.

Don’t Go it Alone

It can be easy to approach elective plastic surgery as somehow not as important as medically necessary surgery. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Accordingly, our staff strongly encourages you to have somebody else to take care of you for at least the first two to three days following surgery. Although you should move around and take light walks starting the first day after surgery, you will need somebody to be with you  while you may still be under the effects of the anesthesia. You will also need somebody else to take care of your children for at least the first week after your surgery.

Resuming Regular Activities

Your recovery time depends a great deal on your age, health, and ability to heal after major surgery. Nevertheless, our surgeons generally recommend a minimum of two weeks before driving or returning to school or work at a desk job. You can also resume light exercise, such as walking or yoga, after approximately two weeks. By the end of four weeks, you should be able to resume any work activities that require exertion, such as lifting or moving heavy objects, as well as return to your regular exercise routine. Most women will have fully recovered from their mommy makeover procedures at the end of six weeks.

As a busy mother, it may feel as though you have little to no time to yourself, let alone to get back into shape after childbirth and breastfeeding. Fortunately, a mommy makeover can get you back on track to looking as you did before you had children. With the help and support of friends and family, you should be able to sail through recovery with little to no problems and be able to enjoy the new you as quickly as possible.
