Power-assisted Liposuction Technique
Power-assisted liposuction (PAL) uses a small, vibrating device on the tip of the cannula to help remove layers of fat from under the skin. This technique is considered to be one of the best for removing fat from the most fibrous areas of the body; this can include the midsection or any area in which fat has collected for long periods of time. The longer that fat has been accumulating in the trouble area, the denser it is going to be, and more difficult to remove. Power-assisted liposuction helps to breakdown these fat deposits so that they can effectively be suctioned away.
How Power-assisted Liposuction Is Performed
The tip of the suctioning device, the cannula, vibrates or oscillates. These minute oscillations break down the fat fibers and make it easier for the suction tube to remove them. The surgeon will start by either sedating and aestheticizing the patient, or just using local anesthesia on the area to receive liposuction. Next, tumescent injections will be administered to cause the fatty tissue to swell and the blood vessels to shrink. Then, the surgeon will make a small incision in the skin, where the suction tube is then inserted. At that point, the PAL device is turned on and the fat is suctioned out of the body.
Benefits of Power-assisted Liposuction
PAL is much faster and more effective than traditional liposuction methods, especially when trying to get rid of very thick and dense fat layers. These layers, over time, develop fibers, which can make them difficult to remove. Because of the vibrations that are emitted from the tip of the cannula, the fat breaks up more easily so the surgeon can gently suction it out of the body. This greatly reduces trauma to surrounding tissues, minimizing post-surgical bruising, swelling, and discomfort.
A PAL procedure can help to boost self-esteem, as well as improve body contouring and physique. Most patients who undergo the PAL technique are satisfied with the results of their liposuction procedure.
Candidates for Power-assisted Liposuction
Candidates for power-assisted liposuction will have deposits of fat that are stubborn and difficult to remove. Women wishing to receive this procedure should be finished having children, as putting on additional weight during pregnancy will reverse the results of the surgery. In general, men and women should be healthy and be willing to maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid gaining weight after the liposuction procedure.
Recovery from PAL
Most surgeons will send their patients home with a compression garment and a prescription for pain medications. Most patients resume most normal activities after about a week, though swelling will normally persist for a month or two after the surgery. It will take at least a month and up to three before the patient’s new body is completely healed and ready to be revealed.
For the first six weeks after surgery, patients should wear the compression garment during the day and night. The compression will reduce swelling and improve the outcome of surgery. Patients should also avoid strenuous activity during this time.
