BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure in the United States. It is a botulinum toxin product (similar to Dysport®) that minimizes the appearance of the fine lines and wrinkles that develop on the forehead and between the eyebrows as patients age. The plastic surgeons at Jefferson Plastic Surgery in Philadelphia offer BOTOX® injections, a simple, non-invasive treatment that helps keep the skin young, fresh, and wrinkle-free.
BOTOX® Cosmetic Candidates
Patients that are interested in getting rid of fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and the side of the eyes may be ideal candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic. Suitable candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic should be at least 18 years of age, physically healthy, and not have any skin disorders in the areas where the BOTOX® Cosmetic will be injected. Patients that have Ptosis, deep facial scars, thick facial skin, facial asymmetry, or are pregnant may not be the best candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic injections. Instead, alternative skin care methods may be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles.
BOTOX® Cosmetic Procedure
BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription injection that temporarily paralyzes the muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles to appear. The treatment process only takes a few minutes. In most cases, anesthesia is not required, though a numbing product can be applied prior to treatment if needed. The plastic surgeons at Jefferson Plastic Surgery will quickly inject the BOTOX® Cosmetic with a very fine needle into areas of concern, and then patients will be ready to return to their normal routines.
BOTOX® Cosmetic Recovery
Since BOTOX® Cosmetic is a non-invasive treatment, the recovery period is quick and free of severe side effects. In fact, the whole procedure only takes a few minutes, and patients may only experience minor discomfort during the injection. To minimize potential risks, it is a good idea to avoid alcohol one week before the procedure, and avoid any anti-inflammatory medications two weeks before treatment.
BOTOX® Cosmetic Side Effects
The most common side effect is slight swelling, bruising, or a minor headache after the procedure. These effects typically fade within a few days of treatment.
BOTOX® Cosmetic Risks
The best way to avoid any risks or complications is to get BOTOX® injections from a licensed and experienced doctor, such as those at Jefferson Plastic Surgery. The risks involved with BOTOX® injections are minimal, but like any procedure, there are some possible risks. Here is a list of potential risks.
- Eyelid droop
- Cocked eyebrows
- Crooked smile
- Dry eyes
- Overly arched brows
- Infection
- Allergic reaction
BOTOX® Cosmetic Results
BOTOX® Cosmetic gets rid of fine lines and wrinkles. While the results are dramatic, they are not permanent. BOTOX® injections will last about three to four months, depending on the patient’s skin type. The treated muscle will eventually return to its original form, and the patient will need another injection.
