The Coronal Browlift Technique

As people age, one of the first places that begins to show the signs of aging is the brow. The brow is one of the most active parts of the face, used in just about every expression, from happy, to confusion, to sadness. As the muscles underneath the brow area move as we talk and emote, the skin above those muscles becomes wrinkled and creased. This is a natural part of aging, but for many people, these wrinkles and creases come much earlier than anticipated and can make a patient look older than he or she actually is. When patients wish to minimize the appearance of these lines, most cosmetic plastic surgeons will recommend a browlift. Once such technique that can be performed is the coronal browlift.

The coronal browlift reduces wrinkles on the forehead and lifts up drooping eyebrows. It does not remove any sagging or wrinkles below this area, instead focusing on the top third of the face. The effects of this procedure are dramatic; patients will see a great reduction in the horizontal lines the run across the forehead and the vertical lines that appear between the brows, and the brows will be lifted. The coronal browlift has no visible incision, making it preferable for men and women who do not want a noticeable incision and scar after surgery.

Procedure

This browlift differs from other techniques in the placement and length of the incision. In the coronal browlift technique, an incision is made across the crown of the head, usually from ear to ear, well within the hairline. After the incision is made, the surgeon can separate the skin from the tissues and muscles. The brow muscles, which have become lax with the passage of time, can be tightened with sutures. The skin and tissues can then be smoothed over the underlying musculature. Any excess skin is then removed. It is important to note that in the coronal technique, the hair-bearing portion of skin is removed. For this reason, the coronal browlift is not ideal for patients with high foreheads or a receding hairline. Once the skin is removed, the incision is closed. Any resulting scarring will be hidden by the hair.

How to Prepare

As with any surgery, each patient should be in good health and choose a skilled surgeon to perform the procedure. Discuss any concerns with the plastic surgeon to prepare for the surgery and the recovery period.

Candidates

Candidates for a coronal browlift technique should be aware that this particular procedure will generally raise the hairline as the skin and muscles are adjusted. Individuals with high foreheads may prefer a different type of technique. In the hairline technique, the excess skin is removed from the non hair-bearing portion of the scalp, and it also offers a good amount of lift. Patients with minor degrees of wrinkling and droopiness may be well suited to the endoscopic technique.
