2015 ASAPS Survey Statistics - Most Popular Cosmetic Procedures for Men and Women
Many people seem to think that cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures are something that only women opt to undergo. This is not the case, of course, as many men also choose to have cosmetic procedures performed to enhance their appearance. However, there are some striking differences in the types of procedures that men and women choose to undergo. These differences were highlighted in the 2015 results released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) of a survey of its surgeon members. Below are the top five cosmetic procedures performed by ASAPS members on men and women.
Women
Women chose to undergo a total of more than 11.5 million cosmetic procedures (both surgical and non-surgical) in 2015. This represented more than 90 percent of the total number of cosmetic procedures performed that year (almost 13 million). Here is the breakdown of the five most popular surgical procedures among women, for a total of almost 2 million:
- Liposuction (more than 344,000 procedures)
- Breast augmentation (almost 306,000 procedures)
- Tummy tuck (more than 172,000 procedures)
- Breast lift (almost 149,000 procedures)
- Eyelid surgery (more than 139,000 procedures)
Men
Men underwent a total of 1.2 million cosmetic (both surgical and non-surgical) procedures in 2015, accounting for 9.5 percent of the total number of procedures performed. Here is the breakdown for the five most popular surgical procedures that men underwent, for a total of almost 200,000:
- Liposuction (more than 50,000 procedures)
- Rhinoplasty/nose surgery (almost 31,000 procedures)
- Eyelid surgery (more than 30,000)
- Male breast reduction for gynecomastia/enlarged breasts (more than 30,000)
- Facelift (almost 14,000)
There are some interesting trends in looking at the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures requested by men and women. Liposuction, which removes stubborn pockets of fat that have not responded to diet and exercise, is quite clearly popular with both men and women. Although the procedure can be done in a number of areas of the body such as the inner and outer thighs, hips, knees, upper arms and back, the abdomen is the most popular area targeted for fat removal.
Eyelid surgery, which removes excess skin and fat from around the upper and lower eyelids is also popular with both men and women, although more so with men. The procedure reduces the appearance of hooded lids, as well as bags around the lower eyelids in order to make the eye area appear more fresh and rejuvenated.
Rhinoplasties, or nose jobs, were popular more popular among men than women in 2015. This may be due to the fact that rhinoplasties can be considered medically necessary in order to correct for structural deformities that hinder breathing and can cause snoring and sleep apnea. However, without more detailed data as to the reason for the rhinoplasty, it is difficult to make any definitive assumptions about the popularity for men.
Cosmetic procedures continue to rise in popularity with both men and women. If the 2015 results are any indication, they should continue to rise.
