ASPS Releases 2015 Statistics

Today, there are many commercials, ads, and television shows about plastic surgery. In addition, the number of people undergoing plastic surgery has increased. Not only is plastic surgery more common than it was in the past, there has also been a dramatic shift in the types of procedures that are being performed. This is shown in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons annual plastic surgery statistics report. The 2015 report was released in February.

The number of plastic surgery procedures performed each year by ASPS-member surgeons have increased by about 115 percent since 2000. Certain procedures like facial procedures and breast augmentations are still among the most common procedures, but other procedures, such as butt lift and augmentation surgery have grown in popularity.

Here, the surgeons of Jefferson Plastic Surgery review some of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, according to the ASPS 2015 report.

• The Top Surgical Procedures. It is no surprise that breast augmentation is still the most popular surgical procedure, with about 279,143 procedures performed in 2015. Liposuction is the second most common procedure, with around 222,051 procedures performed. Nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, and tummy tuck surgery round out the top five list.
• Lifts. Lift procedures, most specifically face lift, have always been popular procedure. These procedures allow surgeons to lift and tighten the skin in specific areas of the body. In recent years, face lift surgery remains popular, and other lift procedures have grown in popularity. There has been a huge surge in lift procedures such as breast lift, buttock lift, and upper arm lift.
• Minimally-invasive Cosmetic Procedures. With the youth-obsessed culture that we live in today, it is not a shock to find out that BOTOX® Cosmetic is the most popular overall and non-surgical procedure, with 6.7 million procedures being completed in 2015 by ASPS-member surgeons. The second top procedure is soft tissue fillers, with 2.4 million procedures performed; soft tissue or dermal fillers include products such as Restylane®, Radiesse®, and Juvederm. Rounding out the top 5 cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures are the chemical peel, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion procedures.
• Additional Popular Procedures. With the obsession with butts today, butt procedures are incredibly popular in 2015. This includes procedures like buttock lifts, buttock augmentations, and buttock implants. Breast reconstruction is also popular procedure among breast cancer patients that have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy.

Plastic surgery procedures remain popular, but it is important to understand that patients need to have a board-certified plastic surgeon perform their procedure. This reduces the risk of complications and makes a good surgical outcome more likely.

Cosmetic surgery may be more popular because results look more natural than ever as a result of new technology and techniques. This also makes the procedures more safe and effective.
