Breast Augmentation to Improve Body Proportion

We have all heard people say that “bigger is better” when it comes to size for breast implants. While it is certainly true that some women want the classic breast shape that sits high on the chest and is fuller on top, our surgeons at Jefferson Plastic Surgery have seen patients who opt for different shapes and sizes that suit their individual goals and look as natural as possible.

When it comes to natural looking results from a breast augmentation, our surgeons believe that the most important factor is keeping your enhanced breasts in proper proportion with the rest of your unique body shape. What are some of the ways that we determine this, and what are your options to determine the right size and shape of breast implant to best improve your body proportion?

Profiling Breast Implants

One way that breast implants can be customized to your individual body proportions is by selecting not just the size, but also the profile that best suits you. The profile is essentially the relationship between the height and the width of the implant. A low profile implant will have more width than height. Conversely, a high profile implant has more height than width.

If you have a narrow chest, our surgeons recommend high profile implants, to avoid your breasts appearing too close together, causing what is sometimes called the “uniboob” effect. On the other hand, low profile implants will be a better option if you have a wide chest, in order to avoid your breasts appearing to sit too far apart.

Implants also come in two different sizes: round or teardrop. If you are looking for the classic full on top effect, round implants will be preferable. On the other hand, teardrop implants will give a slightly more oval shape to the breast.

Changing Your Body Proportions

Much as we would all like to have exactly perfect body proportions, the truth is that we don’t. You may be short-waisted, have shoulders that are overly broad, or hips that are too wide. Below are some examples of what our surgeons can do with various sizes and profiles of implants in order to correct for some of these common issues with body proportion.

If you have a combination of small breasts, wide hips and a small waist, getting high profile implants will even out the proportions of your breasts to your hips, giving you an hourglass figure. If you are short-waisted, high profile implants that are teardrop shaped and situated high on the chest will create the illusion of a longer torso. If you are taller, with broad shoulders, you may wish to consider larger implants with a low profile in a rounder shape to put your breasts into proportion with the rest of your body frame.

While you may not have been born with perfect proportions, this does not mean you must settle for them. A breast augmentation may be able to help you achieve the proportions you have always wanted.
