Cosmetic Procedures in Your 50s

Many people, especially those in their 50s, have often heard the phrase “You are only as old as you feel.” Judging by the fact that people are living longer, this certainly seems to be true. Furthermore, these older people are also living more active, productive lives. They are not content to just sit in a rocking chair, but are making the most of their lives.

It certainly comes as no surprise to the staff at Jefferson Plastic Surgery that patients in their 50s make up a significant portion of their patient base. Even the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the largest professional organization for cosmetic surgeons, has seen this trend, as reflected in the annual survey it conducts among its members. According to its 2014 survey, patients between the ages of 50 and 54 partially accounted for more than 7 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures performed by ASPS member surgeons. Furthermore, almost half of all cosmetic procedures for 2014 were performed on patients between the ages of 40 and 55.

Five Most Popular Cosmetic Procedures for Patients in Their 50s

BOTOX® Cosmetic (approximately 3.8 million procedures): Unsurprisingly, facial cosmetic procedures are the most popular among this age group, as they are looking to offset the effects of aging on the face. BOTOX® injections correct deep frown lines on the forehead and between the eyebrows.

Dermal fillers (approximately 1.1 million procedures): While BOTOX® Cosmetic addresses larger furrows on the upper face, dermal fillers are designed to treat lines around the mouth, nose, and cheeks. They can address marionette lines that run vertically from the outer corners of the mouth down to the chin, fill out gaunt cheeks, and smooth the skin.

Eyelid surgery (approximately 88,000 procedures): The effects of aging are also apparent around the upper and lower eyelids. Patients may have excess loose skin in the upper lids, which can give the eyes a gaunt, hollowed appearance. They may also have excess fat deposits around the upper and lower lids, which can give the appearance of droopy upper lids and bags around the lower eyelids.

Breast augmentation (approximately 84,000 procedures): Although this procedure is more common among patients in their 40s, there are some women in their 50s who decide to undergo breast augmentation. This procedure makes the breasts appear more youthful and is often accompanied by a breast lift procedure, which addresses sagging and drooping due to the effects of aging and weight fluctuation, both of which may be more common among women in their 50s than those in their 40s.

Liposuction (approximately 81,000 procedures): This procedure is most common among patients in their 40s, although some procedures have been performed on older patients in their 50s. A liposuction procedure will remove fat from targeted areas of the body that have not responded to a combination of regular exercise and a sensible diet. While most procedures are done to remove abdominal fat, the procedure can be done on a variety of areas on the body, including the thighs, buttocks, arms, knees, and back.

It is not unusual for people in their 50s to finally be able to enjoy life on their terms after having raised their children. This often includes taking care of themselves so that they can look as fit as they feel. The staff at Jefferson Plastic Surgery is committed toward helping these patients achieve that goal.
