Cosmetic Treatment for Marionette Lines

Dermal fillers remain one of the most consistently popular minimally invasive cosmetic treatments. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, approximately 2 million dermal filler procedures were performed in 2012, up 5 percent from the previous year. Dermal filler treatment was the second most popular minimally invasive cosmetic treatments in 2012, and the second most popular overall cosmetic treatment, whether surgical or non-surgical.

There are a number of ways in which dermal fillers can fill out the face, making it look more youthful, including reducing the appearance of what are known as marionette lines. These lines extend down from the corner of the mouth to the bottom of the jaw on either side of the chin, giving the appearance of a marionette puppet jaw.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

As the body ages, it loses collagen, which is a protein that the body uses to join together bones and fill out the skin. Loss of collagen around the face leads to a sunken appearance, wrinkles, and loose skin around the jaw and chin. Dermal fillers add volume under the skin, in a manner similar to natural collagen.

Which Type of Dermal Filler Is Best to Treat Marionette Lines

Some injectables are specifically designed to treat fine lines, such as crow’s feet around the outer corner of the eyes, or “smoker’s lines” around the lips. However, marionette lines run somewhat deeper and are considered to be moderate to severe facial lines. For these types of facial lines, dermal fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, and Juvederm are appropriate treatment options. These injectables can treat deeper facial creases, and may be layered to achieve excellent results

Dermal Filler Procedure for Marionette Lines

The dermal filler is injected under the skin at targeted areas along the marionette lines. Because a heavy dermal filler is used, it may be injected somewhat deeper than those used to remove fine lines and wrinkles. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis and generally will take less than 30 minutes.

The most common side effects from dermal fillers include bruising and swelling at the injection sites. This will generally subside within the first two or three days following the procedure. Using ice and cold compresses, as well as taking the herb Arnica montana, will help the reduce the amount and duration of bruising and swelling.

Most results with dermal fillers will last three to four months, although some patients have reported longer-lasting results. Over time, the dermal filler material is naturally re-absorbed into the body, and marionette lines will reappear. At that time, patients may opt to undergo a second dermal filler procedure.

Dermal fillers for marionette lines can be a good alternative for patients who choose not to undergo a more invasive face lift procedure. During the facelift, the skin of the lower face is tightened, reducing the appearance of marionette lines. While face lift surgery offers longer lasting results, it does require a longer recovery period.
