Cosmetic Treatments for a Small Chin

At Jefferson Plastic Surgery, our surgeons have treated many patients seeking treatment for a small chin. In this blog post, we discuss the available treatments and techniques to enhance a small chin.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are designed to add firmness and fullness to areas of the face that have lost volume and definition as a result of the natural aging process or dramatic weight loss. They can be used in a number of areas on the face, including the chin, jaw line, and neck.

Dermal fillers are made from materials that simulate hyaluronic acid or collagen. Collagen is a protein that forms into fibers and keeps your skin firm and full. As a result of either aging or weight loss, these collagen fibers can break down, causing a lack of definition to the chin, neck, and jaw line.

A dermal filler procedure can be done at our office, usually in 30 minutes or less, depending on the amount of work to be done. Your surgeon will inject the dermal filler just under your skin in the areas around your chin and jaw line to be enhanced.

There is no recovery time needed, unlike with surgery, so you should be able to resume normal activities right away. You may have some mild redness and soreness at the injection sites, so you may want to avoid shaving the area or wearing make-up for a day or two. Cold compresses should help reduce these symptoms.

You should see results from your dermal filler procedure within 24 to 48 hours. Dermal fillers usually last anywhere from six to 12 months, after which the material is reabsorbed into the body. At that time, you can undergo another treatment procedure.

Chin Augmentation

If you want a more permanent change to the contour of your jaw line and chin, our surgeons recommend augmentation with a chin implant. This type of procedure involves surgery to place the chin implant (usually made of Goretex or solid silicone) above the existing chin bone to make it look more prominent. These implants come in various sizes and lengths to elongate or widen the chin, and your surgeon can help you select which is the best one for you.

Your chin augmentation surgery is usually done in a surgery center, with either general or local anesthesia. Your surgeon will make a small incision on the underside of your chin or inside your mouth, below your lower gum line. The surgeon will then create a pocket above your chin, into which the implant is fitted. The procedure usually takes one to two hours.

In most cases, you can expect to return to most normal activities after seven to 10 days, but it may take three to four weeks before you begin to see initial results from your procedure.

Our surgeons have helped hundreds of patients achieve a stronger jaw line. Why not call our office to book a consultation appointment to see if we can do the same for you?
