How to Boost Your Immune System before Plastic Surgery

Patients can do a lot before and after their plastic surgery procedure to ensure fast healing and the best results possible. That’s why our team of experienced cosmetic plastic surgeons provides patients will ample, detailed instructions of the pre-op process. These instructions will help reduce infection risk and help improve the final outcomes of surgery.

The team at Jefferson Plastic Surgery would like to offer some tips on what patients can do to boost their immune system prior to a surgical procedure. We can go over more advice during a consultation at our Philadelphia, PA practice.

Quit Smoking

Smoking has a negative impact on your body’s ability to heal. It can weaken the immune system, extend recovery times, and lead to a higher risk of infection as a result. If you smoke, avoid using tobacco products for at least two to three weeks before surgery. This may be a convenient excuse to kick the habit for good.

Eat Plenty of Vegetables and Fruits

Fresh vegetables and fruits are a nutritious part of a healthy, balanced diet. Certain vegetables and fruits are especially important if you’re trying to boost your immunity. In the weeks heading into surgery, consider incorporating more of the following produce into your daily diet:

  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Carrots
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Bell peppers
  • Beets
  • Brocoli
  • Citrus fruits
  • Berries
  • Mangos

A Focus on Healthy Protein

In addition to eating vegetables and fruits, patients should also focus on eating healthy proteins. Protein will help with wound healing and proper function of your body. Patients should ideally aim for at least a gram of protein for every two pounds of body weight. Some healthy sources of protein include:

  • Eggs
  • Beans
  • Lentils
  • Greek yogurt
  • Fish
  • Nuts
  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Red meat

Avoid Processed Foods

Whenever possible, it’s best to avoid foods that are heavily processed or that contain a lot of sugars. These refined foods are generally full of additives and artificial ingredients, and they are not as nutritious as whole foods. If anything, your pre-surgery could be a good opportunity to reevaluate your eating habits and start a healthier lifestyle.

The Importance of Exercise

Staying active as you head into surgery has numerous benefits. Exercise improves general wellness, which translates into a healthier immune system. Even regular light exercise each day can decrease your risk of post-op infection and other complications. Try to walk at least 30 minutes each day heading into surgery. Just minor physical activity like that can make a difference.

Rest and Destress

Undergoing surgery can be extremely stressful. Stress can have a negative impact on your body’s response to surgery. In the week or so leading into your surgical procedure, see what you can do to destress. Walking and exercise is helpful, but so is meditation, stretching, yoga, and talking to your loved ones about your feelings. Anything you can do to feel better and more reassured about surgery will be beneficial.

Showering the Night Before Surgery

The night before your surgical procedure, you will be given instructions on bathing and preparing yourself for surgery. Usually this will involve the use of antibacterial soap. Follow all of your surgeon’s instructions for pre-op care closely when it comes to instructions the day before your procedure and the day of your procedure.
