Plastic Surgery for Women in Their 30s

There is an old saying that compares women to a fine wine - both get better with age. While this is true, many patients may wish to enhance their ability to gracefully grow old. This desire to offset the effects of aging often starts long before they are obvious. The staff at Jefferson Plastic Surgery sees many of these patients who are looking to get ahead of the aging curve, starting in their 30s.

Five Most Popular Surgical Procedures

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) collects data each year from its members to determine the most popular cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures they perform. In 2014, more than 350,000 surgical procedures were performed on patients between the ages of 30 and 39, representing 23 percent of the more than 1 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed that year. The five most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in 2014 among patients in their 30s were:

  • Breast augmentation - more than 100,000 procedures
  • Liposuction - more than 70,000 procedures
  • Rhinoplasty (nose job) - more than 50,000 procedures
  • Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) - more than 40,000 procedures
  • Breast lift - more than 25,000 procedures

Mommy Makeovers

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), the age at which women experience first-time pregnancy is on the rise. In essence, women are delaying their pregnancies from their 20s to their 30s. This would readily explain the rise in breast augmentations and lifts, as well as tummy tuck procedures for women in their 30s. Such procedures are usually referred to as mommy makeovers, as they are usually performed once the woman is done with childbearing and breastfeeding. The goal of mommy makeovers is to restore the abdomen and breasts to their fuller, more youthful appearance.

Five Most Popular Non-surgical Cosmetic Procedures

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures mainly involve facial procedures such as botulinum injections, chemical facial peels, laser resurfacing of the skin, or dermal fillers, such as collagen injections. According to the ASPS, the five most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures in 2014 for patients between the ages of 30 and 39 were:

  • Botox/Dysport injections - more than 1 million procedures
  • Laser hair removal - more than 300,000 procedures
  • Dermal fillers - more than 250,000 procedures
  • Microdermabrasion - more than 200,000 procedures
  • Chemical peels - more than 160,000

Putting Your Best Face Forward

Although wrinkles and age spots may not yet be a worry for patients in their 30s, this is when they may start to see the beginnings of such issues. If they spent too much time in the sun without proper protection when they were younger, they may have developed dry facial skin with uneven coloring. Smokers may begin to notice fine lines forming around the lips due to the drying effect that tobacco has on the skin. In other cases, it may just be genetics that leads to the facial features beginning to show signs of aging. All of these reasons may spur patients toward wanting to get ahead of the aging game.

The good news is that undergoing cosmetic procedures while in their 30s may help patients avoid the need for more extensive cosmetic procedures, which may involve longer healing times with less optimal results, in the decades to come. To learn more, contact Jefferson Plastic Surgery today.
