Pros and Cons of Large Breast Implants

The perception is that all women who undergo breast augmentation request large breast implants from their plastic surgeon. The truth is that while some women do want large implants, there are many that prefer a smaller, more natural-looking option. Selecting the size of implants is a highly personal process, and while large implants may look disproportional on one person, they may look perfectly fine on another. The best way to determine which implants are right for a specific patient is to discuss breast implant size at length with the plastic surgeon.

Advantages of Large Breast Implants

For many women, having larger breasts may be a major confidence boost, and the one that they need in order to live a more fulfilling, happy life. When a woman feels good in her body, she will be more confident in all aspects of her life. If assertiveness and confidence is a patient’s goal, and she believes that large implants will help her get there, large implants may be the ideal choice.

Large implants are very distinctive. They are easy to spot and they definitely draw attention. For a patient who wants to stand out in the crowd, they are the best choice.

Another advantage of large breast implants is the balancing out of the figure. Women who have wide hips but naturally small breasts may look and feel heavier than they are because their body is not proportional. These women may opt for large breast implants because they help the patient achieve more balance and proportion. In some women, large implants can help them achieve the natural, hourglass figure they have always wanted.

Disadvantages of Large Breast Implants

There are some fairly significant negatives to choosing large breast implants. First of all, these implants can be very heavy, causing pain in the back and strain in the shoulders, especially for the first couple of weeks or months as the body adjusts to the increased weight. Like naturally large breasts, they can cause bras to dig into the shoulder, making it difficult to stand straight, and pulling on the muscles of the back and chest.

Another disadvantage is that women who opt for large breast implants are more susceptible to complications like numbing of the nipple region, stretch marks, and rupture of the implant, especially if there is not enough skin in the breast area to naturally accommodate the implant.

There is always the danger that there will be a serious discrepancy between what a woman thought she wanted before surgery and the final result. While large breasts may be a sign of confidence in some, implants that are too large can draw unwanted attention and actually make the body look disproportional. This, along with making it more difficult to find clothes that fit properly, may make some women think twice before opting for large implants.
