Top Anti-Aging Procedures
As the old saying goes, you are only as old as you feel. Based on the popularity of anti-aging cosmetic procedures, there are many people who believe in that saying and are determined to feel - and look - as good as possible. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (the leading professional organization for plastic surgeons) released its annual survey data of its member surgeons, showing that most of the five top non-surgical procedures that members performed in 2016 were to combat the effects of aging. This was not an anomaly, but has been a continuing trend, year after year.
Our surgeons at Jefferson Plastic Surgery have seen this same trend in favor of anti-aging procedures with our own patients. Below are some of the most popular of these procedures that our patients request in order to maintain a youthful appearance for as long as possible.
1. Botox
In 2016, more than 7 million Botox procedures were performed by ASPS member surgeons, making it the most popular anti-aging procedure performed that year. Botox injections reduce the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles between your brows and along your forehead. It does this by relaxing your facial muscles in these areas, thereby smoothing out your skin and making you appear more youthful. Botox is injected into the facial muscles around the brows and forehead. Results can last anywhere from 12 to 18 months.
2. Dermal Fillers
Last year, ASPS member surgeons performed more than 2.5 million dermal filler procedures, making it the second most popular anti-aging procedure. Dermal fillers are designed to replace your body’s natural collagen, which is a protein that “fills out” your skin and underlying tissue over your skeletal framework. Your body will lose collagen as a natural result of the aging process or as a result of excessive sun exposure over long periods of time. This may leave you with a hollowed, gaunt appearance to your face. Dermal fillers can be made of a variety of substances, depending upon the area for which they will be used, which can range from the cheeks, to around the mouth or eyes, to the lips. They are injected just below the surface of the skin. Results generally last from 12 to 18 months.
Chemical Peels
In 2016, ASPS member surgeons performed more than 1.3 million chemical peel procedures. This procedure uses a mild acid formulation to remove the top layer of facial skin, which often appears dull and lifeless, as a result of the combined effect of environmental pollution, excessive sun exposure, and dead skin cells. Once this outer layer of skin is removed, your face will appear softer, younger, and more radiant. In addition, a chemical peel can reduce superficial blemishes, acne scars, or discoloration.
There is another old saying, stating that none of us are getting any younger. However, that doesn’t mean you must accept looking that way. Our surgeons can help you defy the effects of aging to keep you looking and feeling youthful for years to come.
